It is so easy to let school or work take over our lives, which makes putting going to the gym or eating healthy on the back burner. No, go! One thing I have to keep reminding myself is, there is nothing more important than my health. Let it marinate. Being healthy plays a big role in our lives as a whole. If our health is not up to par, we cannot run our personal lives or work lives. And parents, especially know what I am talking about. We have little ones that depend on us, so if we are not taking care of ourselves, we cannot take care of them either.
What is Being Healthy?
First, let’s break it down. What is being healthy? It does not mean you have to run five miles a day and only eat broiled chicken and salad. When I say healthy, I am not only talking about just physical, I am also talking about our mental health.
Being out of the military, I had to learn it is ok to not work out five to seven days a week and it is ok to cut it down to at least three days a week. So, three (sometimes four) days a week, I train and box at the boxing gym. I get a full-body workout, cardio, upper strength, abs, everything in. The days in between, your body needs to rest so the muscles can heal and rebuild, which makes you stronger. And at the end of a workout, when you feel you have been beaten down and you are exhausted, it is the absolute best feeling because then you get a burst of energy.
I have to admit for a while I was letting school take over and I put working out on the back burner- mainly around finals time. Do NOT do it! I am back in the gym and active now and not only do I have better productivity with school, but I also have more energy for my daughter. She is getting into wanting to do flips, so I have to have the strength to flip her and swing her around. (Trust I will be enrolling her into a gymnastics program soon!)
What About Food?
Now, let’s speak about what we are eating. It is so easy to grab something quick because we are always on the run and that normally means we are in someone’s drive-through ordering something that we definitely should not be putting in our bodies. It is important to make lunch and pack your snacks the night before or the morning of. This will help keep you in check (and save some money!). Forget the fast food, pack your own sandwich- who needs Subway or Jersey Mike’s?! Salad, beef jerky, almonds, veggie chips, fruit, whatever you are into. Save the eating junk for a weekend. It is ok to eat a little junk as a reward, but let’s try not to let it take over!
Don’t Forget Your Mind!
Next, our minds need to be right! Take breaks, breathe, meditate, dance, scream, draw, paint, whatever takes your mind away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and puts you in a happy place. Just as it is important to be productive in our work lives, we have to have a good personal life. I find my mental break playing with my daughter, going to the gym, the gun range (just because I’m out of the Military doesn’t mean I want my shooting to go downhill!), facial spa, and my absolute favorite place, the beach!
So, in order to take care of business, we need to take care of ourselves first! And surprisingly- but not really- you will see that your work and school will be on point! No one is too busy to take a day off to be good to themselves.
